Story of the Day

Shedrain is one of the court sponsors.  They make umbrellas here in North Portland, for the tourists.  If you live here, you know umbrellas don't work against our sideways rain and wind.  And besides, we're too cool to notice the weather.  (cough cough)  Interestingly, the Shedrain umbrellas are not made here anymore.  Officials told us hiring local labor was not cost effective, so the umbrellas are made overseas and shipped here for distribution.

The Court had a fantastic lunch at the Sentinel downtown with the Rotary Club.  I met a lot of fascinating  people in a wide array of businesses. We each sat at our own table of Rotarians and I was seated next to Claxton Welch, former NFL running back that played for the Dallas Cowboys, the New Orleans Saints and the New England Patriots. He's a real stand-up guy and I like him.

I also met Gabe Fasolino, who encouraged me to apply to the RYLA.  The Rotary hosts this leadership conference in the Gorge every summer and I hope I can schedule that in!  I made a lot of business contacts over pulled pork sandwiches and corn-on-the-cob.

Interesting factoid: When you eat corn-on-the-cob right after applying lipstick, you learn that the bottom lip is forced to curl around and down.  How do you learn this?  You walk around with lipstick on your chin for an hour.


Met the first female fire chief, Erin Janssens, for a second.  She seemed very accomplished and no nonsense.  Then she had to run to city hall and put out a budget fire.  While she was gone, we tried on the fire coats and we got some great pictures.  Luckily there were no emergencies for us to respond to, but we did look fierce.

Our trip to SEI was inspiring.  We played MASH, which is a game about your future life.  Apparently, I'm gonna be married to Sting, drive a Spider, have 3 kids, but have no house.  Sting has some explaining to do....
